There are a number of attachments that are pretty useless for the guns that offer them. These can vary from gun to gun but players should be aware what is useful and what is useless. With any luck this guide will help players save cert points and frustration when playing their various classes. I will discuss the most useful attachments later this week so stay tuned.
The first thing I’m going to address goes for all guns and that is the flash light. While it might appear useful at night time it is only good for getting yourself killed. The flashlight not only shows what is in front of you, but it shows you as a giant beacon of light. For whatever reason the coding of the flashlight shows the area in front of a player as a giant beam of light and the distance that the player gains is around five feet. So it has a short range that does not really help the player as most players are able to see in the dark fairly well. I would advise that if you can’t see well in the dark that you increase your brightness in the game or on the monitor, which will help spot enemies without becoming a target for yourself.
Forward grip on sniper rifles, really this isn’t that difficult to understand. How many times do you hip-fire your sniper rifle? Realistically only once in a blue moon, but if you are hip firing you will be so close to your target it won’t make any difference on the target. I will say that hip firing a sniper rifle and immediately knifing and opponent will kill them before they have time to react, but you will have to be close, so you won’t need a forward grip.
The flash suppressor is an interesting concept to bring into a high definition game such as Planetside 2. However it falls short in realism because most gun flashes you will not see at night time anyway let alone the daytime. It should also be noted that the day and night cycles are not even, there are more day time hours than night time, which makes this attachment not useful. If you add that to the fact that there is an increase in the cone of fire bloom while scoped and hip firing there is little reason to cert into the flash suppressor. Personally I don’t even use it on sniper rifles because the loss of velocity is pretty rough and causes long range rifles to be much less useful.
The standard suppressor should really only be used on sniper rifles, while it could be useful on LMG’s most users will prefer to keep a compensator on theirs. If you are close enough to use an LMG then odds are hiding on the mini-map is not a real bonus to you. Also keep in mind that scout radar is available on most vehicles and you will be detected by radar if you move, the suppressor only eliminates your shot from pinging you on the radar. This is twofold because the suppressor also slows the bullet down where the sniper needs to be closer to get a decent shot and if you are close enough to the target then hiding on radar might be a pointless endeavor.
It is here I will talk about the laser sight, and yes it is useful, but players need to be aware that the laser sight can be seen by enemy and friendly players, so they will know if you are hiding around a corner as it protrudes out several feet. However if you hit “L” by default you will turn the laser off, but your gun will still get the bonus of the sight. It appears there is no way to have the sight turned off for default, but it will stay turned off on your class once you toggle it for that game session. This attachment is best used for guns that you hip fire from where as scoping the rifle does not receive the bonus of a reduced cone of fire. I often see players place this on their pistols because the other options available are really useless and that is true, however I don’t know how many people hip fire their pistols. I do consider this attachment worthwhile, but there are usually better options available as well.
Keep in mind when you are trying out guns see which scopes you prefer before you start spending cert points on them. They don’t cost much to buy but generally players stick to one type of scope for all their weapons and this can save you a few hundred certs if you know what you prefer. Hopefully these tips will save you some cert points and keep you from getting something useless, and when in doubt try it out in the VR room.
